Remote Learning and Continuity of Education Policy
1. Purpose
This policy sets out how ISJ maintains continuity of education when on-site learning is not possible. It defines the school's responsibilities, the expectations placed on pupils and families, and the standards that govern remote provision.
2. When This Policy Applies
This policy is activated when on-site attendance is not possible due to circumstances including but not limited to:
- Public health emergencies or government-directed school closures
- Natural disaster, severe weather, or infrastructure failure
- Individual pupil absence requiring home learning support (e.g., extended medical absence)
This policy should be read alongside the Risk Management and Business Continuity Plan.
3. Continuity of Education Provision
ISJ will make reasonable efforts to continue educational provision during any period of remote learning. Provision will include:
- Scheduled live or recorded lessons delivered via the school's designated platform
- Assignments and tasks that maintain curriculum coverage and progression
- Regular communication between teachers and families
- Access to feedback on submitted work
The Academic Director has overall responsibility for the quality and consistency of remote provision. Heads of Department ensure coverage of their subject area.
4. Expectations for Pupils
- Attend scheduled remote sessions punctually
- Complete and submit set work by agreed deadlines
- Maintain standards of conduct consistent with those expected on-site
- Report technical difficulties to the class teacher promptly
5. Expectations for Parents
- Support a structured learning routine at home during periods of closure
- Ensure the pupil has access to an appropriate device and a stable internet connection where possible
- Communicate with the class teacher if the pupil is unable to participate
- Notify the school of any technical or welfare barriers to engagement
6. Expectations for Staff
- Deliver planned lessons or set equivalent tasks for all timetabled periods
- Maintain regular contact with pupils and families
- Monitor engagement and escalate welfare concerns to the Academic Director
- Apply the Safeguarding Policy and Online Safety Policy in all remote interactions
7. Safeguarding During Remote Learning
All safeguarding obligations remain in force during remote learning. Staff must report any concerns about a pupil's welfare using normal procedures. Live sessions must be conducted on school-approved platforms. One-to-one video communication between a staff member and a pupil should be avoided where possible; where necessary, a parent or second adult should be present.
8. Fees During Closure
In accordance with the Admissions Terms and Conditions, fees remain payable in full during periods of remote learning or school closure caused by circumstances outside ISJ's control. ISJ will continue to provide education in whatever form is available.
9. Review
This policy is reviewed annually by the Academic Director and presented to the Board. It is updated following any activation to incorporate lessons learned.
